How To Find Age Appropriate Toys For Children

Fond memories of childhood usually bring to mind a favorite toy. A cuddly doll, colorful crayons, or a special wagon are all childhood favorites. Toys bring a great deal of joy to children, but they also can be valuable learning tools. Exploring, pretending, and sharing are just a few of the important skills children develop while they play. Toys don't have to be expensive. Cardboard boxes in the backyard and measuring cups in the bathtub are favorite standards. But parents who do wish to purchase toys may find it helpful to know what toys to choose and which to avoid for children of different ages.

Infants and Toddlers - Every child is unique, has its specific pattern of development and has different ways of cruising through the milestones of physical, mental and social development. Infants and toddlers learn about the world through their senses. They are interested in the sight, sound, smell, texture, and taste of things. Objects or toys that can be squeezed, dropped, poked, twisted, or thrown are sure to cause delight. Toddlers also enjoy any item that can be stacked, poured, opened, closed, pushed, or pulled. Toys are vital for the physical and mental development of your infant baby. The toys have a significant bearing on your infant's personality, therefore must be carefully selected.

Preschoolers - During these years, children use their imagination to imitate adult activity and participate actively in physical games. Their physical coordination develops, and the foundation of printing and writing is also laid at this time. Preschool children learn by doing. They are busy developing new skills. They like drawing, painting, and building. They also spend a great deal of time pretending. Dress-up clothes, pretend play and puppets are big favorites. Preschoolers are energetic and active. They need large balls to roll and throw, wagons to pull, and tricycles to ride.

School-age Children - At this stage child learn about getting along with others, and about the adult world of sports, games and careers. They develop intellectual and social interests and make strong friendships, likes and dislikes. School-age children feel more grown-up and love activities that lead to "real products" such as jewelry, "designer" T-shirts, or stamp collections. They also develop a keen interest in sports and enjoy having adult-like physical equipment such as softball gloves, tennis rackets, or skates. They have a better understanding of rules and enjoy playing with others. Board games, cards, or dominoes teach math concepts and problem-solving skills.

The age of your child and not the activity level, is a primary factor in selecting an appropriate educational learning toys. Toys should not promote a single thought or concept; instead, they should enhance creativity and thinking skills. Toys and games are also important for the child to learn and practice logical and problem-solving. Toys that can be played in a number of ways serve as great educational tools and endorse comprehensive development of your child.

Keeping Kids Happy on Long Car Trips - Plan For Fun!

I was first confronted with this daunting dilemma while managing my neighborhood toy store. A frazzled mother came in hoping to find some ideas for keeping her busy kids happy on a car trip to her parents home. After working there for six years before becoming a mother myself it has become clear that parents quite capable of tackling everyday parenting issues often freeze up when it comes time to bringing their little ones on long trips in the car. They have no idea how they are going to avoid chaotic meltdowns, hours of screaming or "are we there yet" style whining. There is hope and with a little planning most if not all of these situations can be avoided.

Let's get the obvious distraction tactics out of the way so we can get into the really good stuff. A portable DVD player, along with some classic favorites or some new never before seen stuff, while this can depend upon the age groups and personalities of your kids, you know what will work better - I always try for both. You can download children's books on "tape" via pod-casts and bringing along favorite upbeat tunes for you and the kids is always a good idea. Allowing ipods and mp3 players is also an option but you may want to set limits on them as I often do so be sure to discuss these limits with the kids beforehand. I think the same applies to hand held games like Nintendo DS - set up any limitations or turn taking guidelines you'd like to have beforehand in order to avoid disagreements later.

About a month before your trip grab a laundry basket and go through the house with two thoughts in mind a) what toys/activities are their favorites and b)can that be done in the car. For the younger kids, you may not want to let them know you're doing this and for the older ones they might be able to do this themselves. Great, now that you have your pile of stuff pick out the best and keep it hidden until the trip so that you will be armed with toys that have a new appeal but are also bankable favorites for your trip! Some ideas, card games, favorite stuffies, action figures, polly pockets and transformers, any travel games etc. Many times I'll pack each kid a little bag of their own but as our family has grown I have found it easier to keep one fun bag at the ready rather than deal with too much stuff underfoot in the van.

Next make a trip to the nearest dollar store and choose squishy, touchable stuff, like slinkies, sticky stretchy toys, activity and coloring books, blank and lined notebooks, noisemakers (it's better to hear a harmonica than a screaming toddler) small puzzles than can be done on a book on a lap, magnetic play boards, sticker activities, chewing gum in case you need to drive through any mountains it will help ears to "pop" and my personal favorite, glo-in-the-dark necklaces, bracelets, etc for when it's too dark to do anything else - be sure to buy the non-toxic ones as my second child tends to bite them after an hour or so! We even placed them around the hotel room as night lights for the kids to navigate their way around a strange room at night!

Consider making your own games - older kids can help with this! Car Bingo is a classic in my family, simply take squares of paper then with a thick black marker and a ruler draw four or five lines down, and the same across, then after a trip to the dollar store put stickers of farm animals, cars, trucks, road signs, wildlife, dogs, birds, cats etc. in each square, make one card for each traveler, but not the driver, and simply have the kids mark them as they spot the things on their cards - a line is a bingo! Then the cards get passed along and a new game begins. The best way to mark them is to get them laminated and then use a crayon to mark and a facial tissue to rub off.

Other games include looking for neat license plates, red barns, counting horses or the classic punch buggy game - minus the hitting, we slap the seat in our car. Another classic with my family involves a deck of cue cards with a thing to find on each one. Road signs, railroad crossings, emergency vehicles, churches, speed limits, pylons, animal crossings, gas stations, favorite restaurants etc. We make up the cards beforehand and to play we deal out 3 at a time, when you spot one of your items you put the card in your lap, score a point and draw another card, first to five wins! Variations can involve each item having different points values, or event cards like steal a point card from another player, choose one card and place it in your points pile, lose or gain one point, trade hands with another player, etc. Be creative and inventive, maybe you can add in landmarks or rules specific to your route of travel!

A final thought, consider stopping along the way at fun, free, or cheap places, it adds time but makes for a memorable journey. When our family was faced with a 21 hour drive we opted to spread it out over 3 days and stopped in at little museums, aquariums, a cave tour, a mall with a huge old merry-go-round inside, Hershey, Pennsylvania, a state park and other neat stops along the way. Before your trip make a list of the cities you will be driving through and then Google the area to see if there are any neat places to stop that might be a perfect side trip for your kids. Taking these moments where and if possible can relieve a lot of the stress and tedium of a long drive with the kids.

By planning ahead for fun you are sure to arrive a much happier family and will have made positive car trip memories that will last a lifetime. Happy Trails!

Make Playtime a Bonding Time For You and Your Kid

Toys are a kid's best friends. They entertain him and give him hours of fun and enjoyment. They educate him by introducing him to the world around him and by engaging him in mind enriching activities that hone his imagination, motor skills, hand to eye coordination among many others. Toys especially the educational ones indeed play an important role in your kid's developmental progress.

But even so, toys can never take the place of parents. Toys can never be substitutes for the love, care and attention that only parents and dedicated caregivers can give. That is why, even though you provide your kid with abundant educational toys, it is still very important that you're there to play with him, guide him and support him during his playtime adventures.

Here are some ways on how you can make playtime a fun bonding time for you and your kid.

1. Create games that are educational for your kid and fun for the both of you. For example, Simon says, an amusing game that will give your kid the opportunity to mimic what adults do in the real world (talk on the phone, sweep the floor), improve his physical skills (jump, run or dance) and enable him to gain a better sense of spatial relations. Create a variation of this game by allowing your kid to take the role of Simon after a while and you will have to imitate his actions. This will not only give him elementary leadership skills but will also surely elicit fits of laughter from both of you.

2. Engage him in mind enriching activities wherein you can participate and guide him. Assembling jigsaw puzzles are fun for any kid especially if he's putting together pieces of his favourite cartoon character. This is also an excellent mind stimulating activity where his visual discrimination, spatial and fine motor skills are being honed. Help him learn about shapes and sizes by guiding him with his puzzle solving adventures. Just be sure that you're patient enough and that you give your kid ample time to figure the puzzle out by himself with only minimal supervision from you. If you put together the entire puzzle for him, it defeats the learning purpose of the activity.

3. Give him mind stimulating toys that you can join him in playing. Building toys are great for parent child bonding. Wooden train sets like the Wooden 120 Piece Train Set in a Tub for example will engage you and your kid in hours of building fun. Create communities by constructing buildings, bridges, and trains. Toys like these are terrific in inciting your kid's creativity and imagination.

4. Interact with your kid as you play. One of the things that toys will not be able to provide your kid is human interaction. That is why it is imperative that you shower your kid with opportunities for parent-child conversations. Talk about anything under the sun, talk to him about your day at work or about how things work while you stack blocks or play with his puppets. Ask him to tell you about his day in pre-school, about the new friends he's met or make him ask you about things he wants to know about.

5. Be supportive with your kid. At this stage where his imagination is very active, you'll find him busy in his imaginative pretend plays where he pretends to be a superhero or a fairytale prince. He'll also likely to have a lot of make-believe stories that he will tell you about like his adventures in outer space. Never discourage him from doing these activities or dismiss his stories as nonsense for these will inhibit the growth of his imagination. Instead, encourage pretend plays by allowing him to live in his fantasy world, and listen and be interested to the stories he has to tell.

Being a parent is never an easy task with all the responsibilities and pressures that come with it. But having a child is one of the greatest rewards you can have in your lifetime and you should enjoy every moment with it by spending time with your beloved little one.

18th Birthday Gift Ideas

An 18th birthday probably ranks right up there with one of the most important events in a person's life, at least when you are turning 18 it does. Not just any 18th birthday gift ideas will do. You will need some great 18th birthday gift ideas for this occasion in order to make it memorable for your favorite 18 year old.

What do all 18 year olds want or need? Money! Anything that is money are great 18th birthday gift ideas. But don't just give money in a card, find gift ideas that will make your monetary gifts memorable. One of the best ideas that is easily available online and in novelty catalogs that you might receive in the mailbox are money puzzles and money trees.

A money puzzle is a clear acrylic block puzzle that is nearly impossible to figure out. It comes with instructions so that you can take apart the puzzle and place a crisp $100 bill into, then rebuild the puzzle and wrap it up as a gift. Keep the instructions handy or give them to mom for safe keeping so that these 18th birthday gift ideas don't end up under the hard end of a hammer.

Money trees are also wonderful 18th birthday gift ideas. These are kits that you put together yourself. They are trees with empty branches that you roll up bills and attach to the branches. Use a variety of denominations for the most unique 18th birthday gift ideas. The recipient won't want to pull the money off of the tree, but won't be able to resist, either. It will be just as much fun watching as it is for the 18 year old to receive it.

Some other great 18th birthday gift ideas that are just as good as cash are stock options, mutual funds, and savings bonds. These are all money that can't necessarily be cashed right away. These 18th birthday gift ideas are a great way to start a new adult off on the right foot to a great financial future!

If these 18th birthday gift ideas aren't what you were looking for, consider what the 18 year old loves to do and find a unique way to give that as a gift. Does he love football? How about some tickets to the next big game? Does she love her car? How about a collection of auto needs like some flares, jumper cables, a safety kit, and a road atlas along with a nice gasoline gift card, all wrapped up in a blanket, of course, because you don't want to get stuck without one. 18th birthday gift ideas should be fun, but should be something that the 18 year old will remember for years to come, and preferably something that will help boost him or her into their new adult life.

The Intricacies of China Unseating Germany As the World's Biggest Exporter! (Part 2)

In the first segment of this article, the author deliberated on the episode surrounding the call for revaluation of the currency of China to forestall the growing trade imbalance between China and the rest of the world. In that segment, the author attributed the demand for its export as not only due to its low valued currency but also to other factors such as government subsidies for firms and investors, expansion in its trade horizon internationally and piracy problems. It was deduced that piracy was taking market share from the western world and also reducing the required imports for China. In this segment of the article, the author would like first to consider some pertinent issues surrounding the trade imbalance between China and the rest of the world especially the western world. Second, whether the growing trade imbalance poses a threat in terms of monopoly. Third, whether the world has options to deal with the situation.

From the perspective of exports and imports composition, the following are some trade statistics estimates for China;

Exports - $ 1.435 trillion (2008 estimates)
Main Export partners (2008 estimates) - U.S 18.6%, Hong Kong 12.7%, Japan 8.2%, South Korea 5.1% and Germany 4.2%

Imports - $1, 074 trillion (2008 estimates)
Main Import partners (2008 estimates) - Japan 12.2%, South Korea 10%, U.S 6.6%, Hong Kong 4.9% and Germany 4.5%

According to the Center for Trade Intelligence report in 2007, China generally exports low tech goods which include but not limited to computers, printers (storage units generally), cell phones, video recorders, television, electronic integrated circuits, puzzles, toys, telephones, handbags, wallets, non-knit women and girls suits, leather footwear among others. Its topmost exports are computers, printers, storage units, office machine parts, cell phones, video recorders and radio transceivers. The topmost imports includes but not limited to electronic integrated circuits, computer and office machine parts, television radio and accessory parts and crude oil. Also, based on the report, China had much trade surplus with countries like Hong Kong, United States, Netherlands, United Kingdom and Spain in descending order of surplus magnitude whilst it had trade deficits with countries like Angola, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, Japan and South Korea in ascending of deficit magnitude. These statistics do suggest that China tends to have surpluses with the western world and on the hand deficits with developing world. Perhaps, the net is the surplus since the surplus with the western world is huge compared to the deficit with the developing and under-developed world. Ultimately, it is right to say that the trade imbalance with the world is the result of high balance of trade surplus with most countries including United States and United Kingdom. From the structure of its exports, it presupposes that China would need much technological innovation to keep up with its exports. Hence, the country cannot do without high tech machinery and other industrial inputs from the western world.

In fact, resilience and low-tech manufacturing alone cannot support its exports. An economic analysis suggest that in the long term the trade imbalance should not pose a threat only if the country's surplus in totality is expected to dwindle which is currently becoming evident. This is because recent reports have it that China's total trade surplus has shrunk to $196.07 billion down 34.2%. As an analyst the decrease is not shocking considering the global slump in demand. Also, it can be inferred that if the global slump continues and domestic demand in China continues to increase, then imports by China would also increase. Increased import is possible because of the country's large population. Next, the increased imports would factor into the exports bringing down the surplus. In the longer term this would reduce drastically the surplus and pave the way for fair competition between China and the world. It must be emphasized that the dwindling in surplus should come predominantly from an expected increase in its imports as against its exports. Nevertheless, the resilience of the Chinese manufacturer to keep exporting may prove this analysis wrong. Eventually, these developments do not suggest a monopoly of the market by China and so there is no need for paranoid expectations.

Now, there is another salient reason why China is enjoying export superiority and that has got to with price elasticity of products in the current global recession. In the current slump of global demand, two things are imminent: the market has become competitive and goods are likely to be price elastic which makes it difficult to make profit. Under such prevailing conditions, any attempt to raise price could lead to a loss. Contrarily, lowering price can lead to increased sales and possibly profit. Apparently, the ability of China to present low priced products promotes its sales, exports ensuring more revenue and profitability. Again, China seems to be successful in this era because of its ability to take advantage of the price elasticity of goods in the current global slump in demand to make more sales and consequently profit. It also suggest the country's industrial and manufacturing sector is exhibiting economies of scale in the production of its goods and this is also a plus for its exports.

The whole story of the trade imbalance does not depend solely on the aforementioned factors but it is indirectly enhanced by the country's growing capital investment predominantly its direct foreign investments and portfolio investments. These two components of capital investment are serving as a backbone for its increasing export as they are consumer confidence boosters for the Chinese economy. The increased direct foreign investments and portfolio investments by China in other economies coupled with the huge accumulation of foreign exchange rate reserves is creating consumer confidence internationally in China's capability and its products even though there are cases of a down side to the quality of its products and also its investments. Additionally, the country's huge foreign reserves can be used to intervene in the foreign exchange market to influence its currency the yuan. Such action plan China may not do unless under severe pressure to strengthen or weaken its currency. Until then market forces will determine the yuan rate as it is allowed to float. Interestingly, for those economies with strong currencies as against China, opportunity is however available as well through the attraction of Direct Foreign investment and portfolio investments. On the downside products from such countries are expensive and unattractive but on the upside if their economy offers favorable low tax rates on earnings, have high interest rate and a stable exchange rate, they qualify as feasible candidates for Direct Foreign investment and Portfolio investment.

Now, I would not like to end this article without talking about the impact of inflation on China's goods pricing in the midst of the country's stunning GDP growth. China's inflation rate is comparatively high. Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures inflation and according reports, this value climbed 1.9% in December 2009 year-on-year. However, the low-value of its currency coupled with government subsidies overrides the potency of inflation. On the other hand, this is not sustainable as inflation can be a problem considering the increasing domestic demand in China. The increasing demand due to the large population coupled with a droop in supply of goods (imports) could trigger an increased inflation (demand-pulled). Additionally, increased demand for raw materials by its industrial and manufacturing sectors as against a fall in global supply of raw materials can augment inflation (cost-pushed) in China and globally. This suggests that it is not the CPI statistic alone that will be affected by these developments but also the Producer Price Index (PPI) statistic which should be a bother to producers in China. These developments may also prompt increased interest rate by the Chinese government to curb inflation.

Finally, the world may not have enough feasible options to deal with the trade imbalance situation except of course to pressure China to revalue its currency. However, with regards to the subsidies from the Chinese government, it is an internal affair which cannot be influenced from an external source. The rest of the world may have to agree with China to promote a global free and fair market. Another option is for the world to do nothing and allow the global slump and market forces to deal with the situation in the longer term. The imposition of tariffs and quotas may have only a minimal effect and should not be resorted to.

Conclusion

The recent economic news about China unseating Germany as the world's largest exporter has undoubtedly enlightened the world about the emergence of China as the new economic world super power and possibly a locomotive engine for the world economy. Behind these developments is the assertion that the feat has been enhanced by the low value of the Chinese currency the Yuan making its exports attractive and more competitive. Consequently, it is expected that in the next few months or years, China will be compelled under growing pressure to reevaluate its currency to make its products less competitive so as to obviate the growing trade imbalance between China and the rest of the world. However, it is not only the low valued currency that is responsible for low priced exports but also other factors namely government subsidies and financial assistance, China's trade horizon, piracy problems and price elasticity of goods in the global recession. Unfortunately, addressing these problems may prove a herculean task as there are not many options available for the world.

3 Great Reasons to Find and Hire a Custom Puzzle Manufacturer

If you are looking for a unique and innovative way to share a special memory, market your products or services, or even launch your own fun creative business, consider having a puzzle manufacturer create a one-of-a-kind solution for you. A custom-designed puzzle is a great way to create a memorable and lasting impression among your friends, family members, co-workers and clients. If this is the first time you've considered this option, the idea of finding and hiring a custom puzzle manufacturer might seem a little extreme. However, once you start considering all the possibilities, you may be surprised at how versatile and functional the common puzzle can be.

Here Are 3 Great Ways to Use Custom Puzzles for Fun and Profit:

1.) Custom Photo Puzzles. These custom puzzles allow you to turn treasured memories into an interactive fun activity for your friends and family. Instead of tucking away your favorite pictures into an old photo album or scrapbook, you can convert them into a puzzle that can be put together and enjoyed for many years to come. For this reason, custom photo puzzles are a wonderful way to memorialize special family vacations, graduation ceremonies, homecoming reunions or even business events. Also, make sure you order extra copies from the puzzle manufacturer you select. Then, you can give your custom photo puzzles away as holiday gifts, use them as door prizes at corporate functions, or offer them as party favors at an upcoming event.

2.) Promotional Items. Let's face it, the average consumer or business owner is inundated with mediocre marketing messages from the time she wakes up in the morning until she goes to bed at night. Therefore, finding original and creative ways to garner attention for your products or services is becoming more and more challenging. An easy-to-assemble, but enticing custom puzzle that depicts your product or service in a memorable and fun way is a great way to stand out from the crowd. To encourage your prospect to put it together, consider incorporating the answer to a compelling question or include a special discount code in the final design. This will help get them to actively engage with your marketing message and will ensure they remember your offering. Further, partnering with an established puzzle manufacturer to design, create, package and ship this type of promotional product will leave you free to focus on following up on leads and closing more sales.

3.) Product Creation. You don't have to be a large toy or game distributor to create and market your own custom puzzle products. All you need is rights to a great photo or design idea and access to a professional puzzle manufacturer who can translate your vision into reality. More importantly, an experienced puzzle manufacturer can provide a lot of insight into current market conditions, packaging ideas and successful promotional methods.

Of course, finding the right custom puzzle manufacturer for your project can save you a lot of time, money and aggravation. So make sure you ask a lot of questions, see samples of other similar projects they've completed, and speak to as many customer references as you can.

Derain Thames Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle

Derain Thames Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle

Product Details

This 226 piece puzzle is a Fauvist rendering of the St. Paul Cathedral as seen from the River Thames in England. An oddity about the Thames is "swan upping": every year since the 15th century the locals ceremoniously capture and tag swans to mark ownership (please see wikipedia for further details). The 226 pieces in this puzzle include multi-piece figurative whimsy pieces celebrating swan upping designed by Seattle artist Maria Berg (click on the small image below the big image above to see example puzzle pieces).

The image is a 1906 painting by Andre Derain. Andre Derain was called a Fauvist, which translates as "wild beast", for his ferocious disregard of the sobreity of real-world colors.

All our puzzles are made of layers of hard and soft woods and measure roughly 1/4" thick. Comes packaged in an unfinished pine wooden box.

Warning: puzzle pieces are a choking hazard for small children.

Playmobil Toys, Lego's and Transformers - The Cyclical Cycle of Children's Toys

Here's how it goes: first it becomes popular, then it becomes unpopular, then it becomes kitsch, then, sometime after that, it becomes popular again. Hence goes the pop culture cycle. Chances are by the time you grow up, all those toys that you abandoned when you became "too grown up" to play with, become important to you again. They become reminders of your youth and you begin to yearn for them. Of course, you're not the only ones. Big business knows this. Because of this you should ready to pay a premium for your beloved Playmobil toys or My Little Pony's because you're not the only one looking for them.

I recently went to the Downtown Disney District in Anaheim, CA to meet some friends for dinner. As I was walking I noticed that there was a rather large Lego Chain store which sold nothing but Lego sets and products. I didn't have to think twice, I made a bee-line for the store. Now, I know Lego's are thought of as a little boy thing, but I'll make no qualms about the fact that when I was a kid I loved Lego's. Sure, I enjoyed Barbie's, My Little Pony's, etc., but for me there was nothing more fun then putting together a Lego airport, police building or pirate ship. As I walked into the store and began to look around, two things immediately popped into my head. First: if you can dream it, there is a Lego set for it now. Forget airports, you can literally build the Taj Mahal now out of Lego's. Second, and most relevant, Lego's have gotten expensive. I'm sure you can still get a small set at Wal- Mart for something resembling a reasonable price, but wow, if you want to build an airplane or an building or a pirate ship prepare to open your wallet. A set can cost up to $70 now. Even the cheaper sets cost $30. Needless to say I passed on purchasing a set, even if I felt a child like need to.

It didn't hit me until I got home why these Lego sets cost so much. These sets were not for children, but instead, for adults who grew up on Lego's and again want to experience the thrill of constructing a building out of these tiny blocks. I recently help put together a small set a cousin brought over, and trust me; it's still as fun to do as I remember it.

If anything, this experience at the Lego shop reminded me of the "kitsch" cycle. Toy sellers now understand that parents are as willing to purchase something that reminds them of their youth as they are to purchase these new products for their children, same goes for Playmobil Toys too. Look at the Transformer franchise. Most of the people who saw the film hadn't played with a transformer for 15 years, but went in droves to the movie because of cherished childhood memories (the movies were terrible by the way, which makes the success of the second one even more "memories" based).

Next time you're at Target look around and look at how much of the DVD's or home supplies marketed to adults are simply repackaged and "hip looking" products from your childhood. I think you might be surprised at what you find. Chances are while you've "grown up" your tastes have pretty much stayed the same.

Practice Their Fine Motor Skills With Stacking Blocks Or LEGOs

Stacking blocks may seem useless since it seems that all the child can do with them is to stack them one by one. Yes, that is exactly what children are supposed to do with stacking blocks. Mind you, they are the simplest yet the most useful amongst any other learning toys in the market.

When kids play with these, they do not need to worry where one should go, or where the other should be attached to. There are no limits, no rules and no instructions, thus, giving the child the freedom to stack them any way he/she wants to. Stacking blocks can stimulate kids' imagination and creativity and at the same time develop their sense of autonomy. With these blocks, they exercise their right to choose without having their moms or dads to decide for them. These materials encourage them to explore and be free.

There is a variety of these toys that are available in the market nowadays: alphabet blocks, shape blocks and even the ever famous block of the 90s, the LEGO. Stacking blocks are very educative and beneficial, provided that they are safe and non-toxic, which is the ultimate consideration in choosing them.

When picking out blocks from the market, be sure to check the paint or the stain of the block. Be sure they do not contain any lead and non-toxic because most likely than not, these blocks would end up in their mouth.

Stacking blocks can be easily stored when not in use, so there is no need to worry when you have these blocks in your day care center.

Sleeping Cots For Little Tykes

Day care centers do not only provide areas exclusively for learning, socializing and playing. They also provide areas for sleeping and resting. Children do get tired from all that jumping, skipping, drawing, solving puzzles and running around. They get drained and lose their energy. So, day care centers have these to allow the little kids to recharge and regain all the energy that they've lost through all the fun activities.

Exercise and physical activity is essential for the kid's growth. But, so is sleeping. In fact, studies show that it is during sleep that kids grow the fastest. Growth hormones are released intensely during this sleeping hour.
Sleeping cots in day care centers allows the kids to get their much needed rest. It is important that the sleeping cots are comfortable. They shouldn't be too firm or too soft. A comfortable bed will give your kid that wonderful feeling when they wake up after a short nap or a deep sleep. Most of them are slightly raised due to the legs that make them for easy stacking. Make sure that the sleeping cots aren't raised too high to avoid tipping and having kids roll over and fall.

The material used should also be considered. They should be moisture proof or waterproof. Little kids are prone to bed wetting so the material should be easy to clean with soap and water. The sleeping cots should be lightweight. They should also be portable. It is nice to know that with sleeping cots little tykes will have a place to rest their heads when they get tired.

My Birthday Conundrum

My brothers birthday is just around the corner and I always dread this time of year. My brother is one of those people who you just hate to buy for. He only likes 'in stuff' which is easier said than done! The weirdest things can be in fashion which most sane people would think of as a random naff item. I decided that the only way I would get anything that he would feel was 'in' and that I felt wasn't a waste of money was looking on a gizmo website.

After searching the sites I got a few ideas which I thought would be cool ideas.

I found a wicked thing called a voodoo knife set which was designed by an Italian. To be honest, even I liked it which says something! It adds some style and uniqueness to your kitchen- well until everyone else buys one too! Not only is it funny but I will be buying him something that is quality as it comes with a good knife set.

The other thing I thought would be a great gift for him was a squeeze banana. With a constant flow of deadlines looming it's a get stress relief. 'squeeze a banana, don't go banana's!' is a great fun little toy!

Whatever I get him I may be getting another one for me! Before I know it my brother may think I'm cool! Possibly....probably not!

If you have a similar problem with a loved one why not give the web a surf and get a cool gadget!

Online Toy Store Safety Tips

Online toy stores are ideal places to shop for toys. Your chances of locating that hard to find toy are much higher online, and you can easily compare prices and read reviews before making your purchase.

Of course, while you surf the online toy stores, do not forget to keep safety in mind. Here are 3 quick tips for buying safe toys online:

1. Do not buy building sets with magnets for children under the age of 6

Small magnets that come loose from toys pose a severe choking hazard. If you buy a building set or other toy with small magnets, make sure you purchase your toy from a reputable toy manufacture. Once you get the toy home, regularly inspect the set to be sure none of the magnets have come loose. Be sure to keep small magnets away from young children who might swallow them.

2. If you are buying a scooter, skateboard, bicycle or other riding toy, buy a helmet as well

When you are buying a bicycle, scooter or other riding toy, be sure to purchase the necessary safety related equipment. Every child should have a multipurpose, and proper fitting, helmet that can be used for bicycles, scooters, and other riding toys. Elbow pads and knee pads are also essential for skateboarding and can be especially helpful when your child is first learning to ride a bike.

3. Never buy small balls or toys with other small parts for children under the age of 3

Small balls and other toys with small parts pose a choking hazard for children under the age of 3. Be sure to check the manufacturer's age recommendations and any warning indicating that the toy would not be safe for children under the age of 3. If you are shopping at an online toy store and there is no recommended age range for the toy you are considering, do not purchase the toy for a child under the age of 3. Find a similar toy that specifies the recommended age range on another website.

An Introduction To Jigsaw Puzzles

A jigsaw puzzle requires proper assembly of interlocked cut-out pieces resulting in the formation of a figure or picture. British mapmaker John Spilsbury invented the jigsaw puzzle in 1760. It was intended to be an educational toy. Puzzle maps are used even now to teach geography to children.

Puzzles were considered high-society entertainment, but technological advances brought down the prices. Early jigsaw puzzles were of the very simple non-interlocking variety also called push-fit puzzles. Jigsaw puzzles became very popular in early twentieth century, and their popularity was further boosted with the invention of interlocking pieces. During the Great Depression, jigsaw puzzles became a very popular form of family entertainment when drugstores and libraries started renting them out. Antique wooden and cardboard puzzles are considered collectibles, and completed puzzles are rated even higher. Wooden jigsaw puzzles are considered the best jigsaw puzzles. These puzzles are handcrafted using mechanical scroll saws.

Jigsaw puzzles are typically available in 500-piece, 750-piece, and 1,000-piece sizes. Double-sided jigsaw puzzles that can be solved from either side and three-dimensional jigsaw puzzles are also available. Jigsaw puzzles are also differentiated by the method of cutting pieces. Some of the prevalent cutting methods are fully interlocked with similar-shaped pieces, fully interlocked with uniform pieces, fully interlocked with differently arranged blanks and tabs, and non-interlocked sides. Jigsaw puzzles that are fully interlocked with uniform pieces are considered most difficult to solve. Modern jigsaw puzzles are made of cardboard, with a photograph or artwork glued on to it. Cardboard is then punch-cut into pieces with the help of metal dies. Castles and mountains are two of the popular images found on jigsaw puzzles.
